DeVIDE 9.8 released

with 15 comments

I am extremely happy to be able to announce the release of DeVIDE 9.8!

devide-v9_8-b

Major changes include:

  • The DRE: the DeVIDE Runtime Environment is a complete Python distribution including cmake, swig, Python, wxPython, numpy, matplotlib, gdcm, VTK and ITK.  The DeVIDE application makes use of this runtime environment, and now you can too!
  • WrapITK 0.3.0: The latest generation ITK pure-swig wrappings have been included.
  • Multi-threaded VTK wrappings.
  • Release on 4 platforms: Linux 32, Linux 64, Windows 32, Windows 64.

Read the 9.8 Release Notes, then go to the downloads page to get yours!

Let me know how it goes in the comments to this blog posting and on the mailing list, or report some bugs using the issue tracker.

  1. wxPython, numpy, matplotlib now that is a BIG nice thing. Setting them up correctly to work together was a pain in the ***. Good job!

    • Hi there Bastijn and welcome back!

I have to qualify that the win64 binaries do not include numpy and matplotlib. This is the first time that DeVIDE has any kind of win64 binaries at all, and numpy and matplotlib were proving especially obstinate, so I decided to postpone them both until their win64 ports are slightly more mature.

lin32, lin64 and win32 all have them though!

      • Hi Charl, thanks for the welcome back. I understand the problem on win64 doing wxPython etc. I have installed them myself…..for 85% and it is now stuck and broken. Compiling python libs etc on windows is much worse than on linux :(.

Will try Devide on windows7 64bit in a few days though. Just to test :).

    • My apologies, there was a power outage at my lab during the night, and it was too long (1 hour) for the UPS to handle. The webserver is working, but the server hosting the DeVIDE binaries is not yet accessible.

Our fantastic system administrators are working to solve the problem (on Sunday!!), so things will hopefully be back to normal by this afternoon (Amsterdam time).

  5. When trying to run DeVIDE on windows I receive several import errors (both in version 9.8 and 11.x).
Is this a problem on my computer? I would appreciate to know how to solve this error!
    Thanks in advance!

    • Ok I haven’t seen *that* specific error before.

If I have to hazard a guess, I think it’s trying to load one of your own installed VTK DLLs instead of its own DLLs. 11.x should be more robust to this, as it privately inserts DeVIDE’s path before your system path.

      * With 11.x, do you get exactly the same error?
      * What does “dre versions” output?
      * Do you have another VTK installation on your machine?

It would be best to continue this on the DeVIDE google group at http://groups.google.com/group/devide-users — do you mind?

    • One more thing, besides the diagnostics below, could you also do the following:

      dre ipython
      import sys
      print ‘\n’.join(sys.path)

  6. Thanks for your quick reply.

I installed both versions of DeVIDE on a fresh install of Windows XP (without previous versons of VTK). This version was installed on a mac using a virtual machine (I preferred to install the binary).

However, I just tried to install DeVIDE on a “pure” Windows pc and encountered no problems anymore. Possibly, the virtual machine affects some DLL’s? Anyhow, for me the problem is solved!
